Dr. Schroeder is President, CEO and co-founder of Kitware, Inc. Will's role at Kitware is to identify technology and business opportunities, and to obtain the necessary support for Kitware to meet these opportunities.
Will also contributes to several technical projects including VTK (on the ARB), as Core 2 lead for the NAMIC National Center for Biomedical Computing, and is working with Sandia and the U. of Utah to develop the SAGE informatics consortium.
It is time for the open source community to stop looking toward proprietary competitors for inspiration, and instead leverage OS advantages and community passion to leave these competitors in the dust.

I think the future of scientific computing is to learn how to grow, manage and coordinate large, ad hoc communities. This will challenge many of us, whether we are trying to coordinate international teams of academic and industrial researchers or businesses that must learn how to assemble, manage and motivate disparate communities to provide effective technology solutions.
