Hua Yang received a B.E. in Electronic and Information Science from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (China) in 1998, an M.S. in Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence from the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences (China) in 2001, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2008.

At UNC Dr. Yang was a member of the Augmented Reality Group where he contributed to developing 3D guidance systems that improve surgeons' ability to accurately perform minimally invasive surgeries (MIS). These systems have been tested and enhanced in multiple animal and/or human trials. He also contributed to several other projects including the development of a 3D telepresence system for medical consultation. Additionally, he taught Introduction to Scientific Programming, an undergraduate class at UNC. His thesis research was focused on appearance-based tracking and motion segmentation.

Dr. Yang has been employed by Kitware, Inc. since August 2008 as a member of the Research Staff with a focus on computer-guided surgery and medical image segmentation. His research interests include augumented reality, tracking, motion segmentation, depth reconstruction and image segmentation.
