Chuck Atkins

Chuck Atkins is currently a principal engineer for Kitware’s Scientific Computing team. He has expertise in high-performance I/O and it’s application to visualization data as well as complex software build and deployment strategies for HPC environments, specifically on Cray supercomputing systems. Prior to joining Kitware’s Scientific Computing team, Chuck started in Kitware’s Computer Vision group, joining the company in 2008. During his time there he developed distributed infrastructures for real-time processing of aerial surveillance video for a number of DARPA programs including VIRAT, PerSEAS, and Insight. He also designed portable cluster computing systems for Wide Area Motion Imagery used operationally by the DoD. Aside from his software development responsibilities, Chuck is also an Information Systems Security Officer for Kitware’s on-site government-approved secure computing environment.

Prior to joining Kitware, Chuck received his B.S. in Computer Science from Oklahoma State University in 2006 with additional minors in Math and Applied Physics. He went on to develop multi-node parallel vision systems for manufacturing inspection and quality control at Hutchinson Technology, Inc.

Chuck is an avid believer in Open Source Software and Open Science. He feels that by creating an open and collaborative environment for software and science that it can help to advance the capability of the entire field as a whole.
