VolView is an open-source, intuitive, interactive system for volume visualization that allows researchers to quickly explore and analyze complex 3D medical or scientific data on Windows, Mac and Linux computers. Users can easily load and interactively explore datasets using 2D and 3D display methods and tools. 3D tools include volume rendering, maximum intensity projections, and oblique reformatting. The ability to save an entire visualization session allows users to easily stop and start sessions. Advanced users can perform custom data processing using a simple plug-in API.

While VolView is not currently under active development, Kitware is committed to advanced volume rendering.

We encourage you to use the volume rendering functionality in our other open source tools.

VTK
The underlying toolkit behind VolView, VTK has been providing advanced 3D graphics rendering, image processing, and visualization for over 20 years. The classes for volume rendering are regularly updated using the latest state-of-the-art techniques.

3D Slicer
3D Slicer is a platform for medical image informatics, image processing, and three-dimensional visualization which incorporates many features from VolView including volume rendering, DICOM support, segmentation, and registration.

ParaView
ParaView is a multi-platform application for interactive scientific visualization, including volume rendering.

Tomviz
Tailored for visualizing electron tomography data, Tomviz provides visualization of 3D datasets.
