Kitware to Integrate AI into NASA’s Aerospace Simulations

New AI/ML tools will help engineers get insights faster and more efficiently
CLIFTON PARK, N.Y., September 18, 2025 — Kitware, a leader in open source scientific computing and AI/ML, announced it has been awarded a NASA Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II contract to make artificial intelligence (AI) easier to integrate into large engineering simulations. The project will deliver open source tools that plug into NASA’s existing software, helping scientists run studies faster and explore more without drastically increasing computing costs.
“Our goal is to incorporate AI into the tools NASA engineers already rely on,” said Corey Wetterer-Nelson, Ph.D., project manager at Kitware. “That means quicker answers, fewer compute hours, and greater confidence in results without asking teams to change their workflows and processes.”
Under Phase II, Kitware will:
- Provide a user-friendly AI toolbox that works within running simulations.
- Include built-in ways to check and compare model performance so results are trustworthy.
- Make the software scalable across modern computing systems so organizations of all sizes and domains can benefit.
Though this project will focus on computational fluid dynamics (CFD), the results of Kitware’s effort will have a broad impact, enabling scientists and engineers in many fields to add AI to their simulations with minimal effort.
