Matt Montaño is the director of software and data solutions at Kitware. In this role, he leverages his business development expertise to connect Kitware’s technical capabilities with the needs of commercial, federal, and academic customers. As part of Kitware’s leadership team, he helps guide the company’s overall success while maintaining its commitment to being a great place to work.
Matt is a technology executive and open source software leader with more than 20 years of experience delivering artificial intelligence and advanced data solutions across public, private, and academic sectors. Prior to joining Kitware, he served as chief information officer at the National Park Service, where he led the largest technology modernization effort in the agency’s history, enabling advanced geospatial analytics, AI modeling, and scaling data science capabilities. At the General Services Administration, he directed the Federal Data and AI Center of Excellence, creating government-wide playbooks and maturity models, and growing a 1,000+ member Community of Practice.
He also served as CIO at the National Eye Institute, where he launched the NEI Data Commons, a cloud-based research platform that enables global access to genomic, proteomic, and imaging data. Earlier in his career, he founded and scaled a healthcare technology startup, held technology leadership roles at the VA Palo Alto Healthcare System and NATO, and served as a Medical Service Corps Officer in the U.S. Army.
Matt holds a B.S. in computer science from Texas Christian University. He has also completed graduate certificates in user experience design from Cornell University and artificial intelligence strategy from Georgetown University. He is a certified Azure AI Engineer and holds certifications in Leading Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe). He is currently completing an M.S. in computer engineering at Regis University.
