Medical Image Analysis and Visualization

Kitware offers deep expertise in medical image analysis and visualization, supporting a wide range of applications from brain morphology and tumor assessment to surgical planning and augmented reality systems. Our capabilities span algorithm development, scientific visualization, and software engineering for both research and clinical use.

We develop custom image analysis algorithms for brain morphology, tumor volume estimation, vessel modeling, multiparametric MRI, and histology interpretation. These tools support clinical trials, mental health studies, and pre-clinical research, enabling quantification, segmentation, registration, and computer-aided diagnosis.

On the visualization side, Kitware leads the field with the Visualization Toolkit (VTK), the standard for rendering complex scientific and medical data. VTK powers high-performance visualizations across platforms—including desktops, mobile devices, surgical microscopes, and AR/VR systems. Our philosophy of “pervasive visualization” ensures that the data you need is always accessible, interpretable, and embedded in your workflow.

Our work builds on decades of open source leadership. We are core developers of ITK and VTK and creators of 3D Slicer and ParaView—platforms that enable reproducible, scalable, and interactive visualization and analysis.

We collaborate with the NIH, DoD, and other partners on grant-funded and contract-based R&D. We also offer services to extend and customize ITK, VTK, and 3D Slicer for commercial and government applications—accelerating the deployment of cutting-edge solutions across medical research, diagnostics, and treatment planning.
