Spring Cleaning: Inside the ParaView Issue-A-thon
Just as spring invites us to clean and refresh our surroundings, the ParaView community recently came together for an “issue-a-thon” to do the same for its issue tracker. This focused effort brought contributors together to review, triage, and update longstanding issues, helping ensure the tracker reflects the current state of the project.
A total of 13 contributors came together to evaluate longstanding issues. At the outset, the tracker contained 1,971 open issues. Through careful review and triage, that number was reduced to 1,832, with 139 issues closed as a direct outcome of the cleanup. In total, the team processed 352 issues (roughly 18% of all open issues), a meaningful sweep for a project of this size and longevity.
Just as importantly, the effort went beyond simply closing tickets. The team reviewed 213 open issues to ensure they remain relevant, reproducible, and clearly understood. This kind of validation work is essential for maintaining a high-quality issue tracker that helps developers focus on real issues that need to be addressed. As part of the process, 90 issues were confirmed or reconfirmed, reinforcing the ParaView community’s commitment to maintaining software quality. Even issues that were reported years ago were revisited, checked against current behavior, and updated as needed.
Efforts like this are key to long-term sustainability in an open source project. A well-maintained issue tracker helps new contributors get involved more easily, allows developers to prioritize effectively, and ultimately leads to a more robust and reliable application.
If you’re interested in getting involved, there are several ways to participate. You can join ParaView Office Hours, held every other Thursday, to connect with developers and users, contribute to future issue-a-thons, or check out our community calendar for upcoming events. Whether you’re fixing bugs, testing workflows, or helping triage issues, every contribution plays a role in strengthening the ecosystem.
From Community Effort to Scalable Workflows
While community efforts like the issue-a-thon are essential, not every team has the time or resources to contribute directly. At the same time, as simulation data grows in size and complexity, maintaining effective visualization workflows remains critical.
For organizations that rely on ParaView in their workflows, Kitware offers professional development, training, assessment, and support services to address challenges and improve performance. These services include installation and deployment support, performance optimization, custom feature development, and long-term maintenance. By working directly with the experts behind ParaView, teams can resolve issues more efficiently and ensure their systems remain reliable.

Whether through community participation or professional support, the goal remains the same: helping users get more value from their data.
