We are excited to announce the 4.4 VolView release, which brings powerful new features for annotation, segmentation, and customization. From smarter painting tools to smoother segmentations and real-time pixel feedback, this update enhances both precision and workflow efficiency. Try the completely client-side live deployment now!

Fill Between Slices

This feature enhances segmentation workflows by enabling automatic interpolation between manually annotated slices. When you paint or draw regions on two or more non-consecutive 2D slices, the tool intelligently fills in the intermediate slices, creating a smooth, continuous segmentation. This streamlines the process and minimizes manual effort in areas where outlines remain consistent across slices.

Paint within Threshold Range

The paint tool now has min and max threshold values. Instead of painting over the entire image, you can now define an intensity range (e.g., only pixels between value 50 and 150). Painting will be restricted to the areas where pixel values lie within that threshold, ensuring you only annotate regions of interest.

Display pixel level at the location of the cursor

View real-time pixel intensity values directly under the cursor as you move across the image. This provides immediate feedback for precise analysis and easier identification of structures based on intensity.

Gaussian Smoothing for segmentations

VolView now offers a “Smooth” tool that applies a Gaussian smoothing algorithm to your selected segmentation in three dimensions. This feature softens abrupt boundaries, removes jagged edges, and produces visually cohesive segmentations for presentations or downstream analysis.

Ctrl+Scroll Changes Brush Size

To quickly change the paint brush size, hold down the control key and scroll with the mouse.

Maximize View with Double Click

You can now double-click on any view while using non-annotating tools (e.g., Window/Level, Zoom, Crosshairs) to instantly maximize that view. Double-clicking again restores the previous multi-view layout, enabling quick toggling between focused and overview modes without disrupting your workflow.

VolView Customization

In addition to the powerful new features in VolView 4.4, VolView can serve as a customization platform for various applications. A recent example is VolView Insight, built on top of VolView to unify imaging and clinical data into a single interface. For clinicians, VolView Insight delivers an integrated view of images, patient records, and AI-assisted workflows. For researchers and developers, it serves as a realistic testbed for deploying multimodal models in environments that mirror clinical reality. Custom solutions like VolView Insight retain VolView’s speed, quality, and extensibility while adding targeted workflows, integrations, and user experiences tailored to specific industries and research domains.
