Mike Ter Louw, Ph.D., is the director of advanced cybersecurity research on Kitware’s Cybersecurity Solutions team. Mike leads and supports research and development initiatives focused on cybersecurity, machine learning, natural language processing, artificial intelligence, anomaly detection, and information systems security. His expertise includes advancing and scaling prototype solutions into deployed capabilities, leading interdisciplinary technical teams, and driving innovation on complex technology projects.
Before joining Kitware, Mike served at CACI, Inc. as vice president and chief science officer, cyber science & technology division, and previously as R&D technical director – active cyber capabilities, technical fellow. In these roles, he directed national security research and development programs focused on artificial intelligence, machine learning, large language models, cybersecurity, and advanced networking technologies. He cultivated and led geographically distributed teams of researchers, scientists, engineers, and technical experts, managed large-scale R&D contracts and operational budgets, and supported the development and deployment of cyber deception and autonomous decision-making capabilities. Prior to CACI, Mike served as a network security research scientist and principal investigator at LGS Innovations, Bell Labs, where he developed NLP-based cybersecurity capabilities, machine learning anomaly detection pipelines, and automated software analysis platforms.
Mike earned his Ph.D. and B.S. in computer science from the University of Illinois at Chicago. His academic and technical background includes work in cybersecurity, machine learning, natural language processing, anomaly detection, network traffic analysis, modeling and simulation, and information and systems security. He is a U.S. Army veteran.
