Image Analysis Solutions

Medical Imaging

Our software expertise is complimented by our skills as world-class medical imaging researchers, with more than half of the medical imaging team holding Ph.D.s. We have served as principle and co-investigators on many NIH and other medical research grants, and have been members of numerous highly successful commercial R&D teams. Our expertise spans from basic science to product development and from disease detection to treatment monitoring. Examples of our work include modeling the variation in bone shape to help prosthesis manufacturers design devices that effectively cover their target populations, devising methods to assess volumetric tumor response for clinical trials, creating and publishing new algorithms for assessing traumatic brain injury severity, and collaborating on the morphological and molecular features of tumor microenvironments.

One pillar of our medical imaging work is the open-source libraries that we have helped to develop. We are a lead developer and the primary maintainers of the Insight Toolkit (ITK), which has become the industry standard for medical image analysis. The National Library of Medicine has provided over $15 million for its development, and ITK now contains over 2 million lines of code. Beyond ITK, we have created numerous other toolkits such as the LSTK (the Lesion Sizing Toolkit, an extensible platform for CT lung lesion sizing) and TubeTK (a collection of modality-independent algorithms and applications that segment, register, and characterize tubes such as liver vessels in 3D ultrasound, brain vessels in MRA, bronchi on CT, and axons in confocal microscopy).
